Young people are shaping the future of care and nursing home furniture

At Seniorcare, our focus remains on the comfort and well-being of the elderly, while also recognizing the valuable contributions that young people can bring to our company and sector in terms of enthusiasm, ideas, and projects.

Collaborating with students from the CEU – Cardenal Herrera University has been a rewarding experience, allowing us to bridge their creativity with the world of care and nursing home furniture.

Under the guidance of Ana Segovia from Odosdesign, we’ve shared our extensive experience and knowledge in the design and manufacturing of care and nursing home furniture with students pursuing their master’s degree in Product Design. This collaboration has been a fabulous opportunity to share the needs and shortcomings of our sector and has stimulated their ingenuity and social commitment.

In 2050, one-third of the Spanish population will be over 65 years old. Despite being among the healthiest countries – according to Bloomberg -, we must seriously consider the implications of one in three individuals facing not only health, mobility, or accessibility issues, but also loneliness and social isolation. I wanted the students to understand that, as designers, we have a responsibility: our products can make an impact, add value, and even save lives. They contribute to ensuring that the elderly have a more dignified life” explains Ana Segovia.

The nine students, organized into groups of three, presented three innovative proposals: Bambú, Lira, and Pearl. These fresh perspectives have contributed to broadening our vision as manufacturers of care and nursing home furniture.

Bambú – an idea by Paula Iglesias, Iván Seguí, and María Manero – is a modular bench system, equipped with handles. While designed for the elderly, it’s versatile for users of all ages.

Sustainability is at the core of its design, with connections aimed at facilitating reuse and recycling.

This modular bench adapts to the user’s lifecycle and suits both aged care facilities and domestic environments.

Lira, an upholstered armchair with wheels and a back handle for easy mobility, is a design by Enrique Villena, Teresa Ruiz, and María Rochina.

Specially designed armrests enhance comfort and aid in sitting and standing. It features an integrated flip-top table in a semicircular shape, magnetically attachable to another table, creating spaces that foster social interaction.

Pearl targets individuals with dementia who, in elderly care facilities, may feel isolated and alone. Ainhoa Guillén, Constantin Boes, and Claudia Hernández designed a table to promote shared experiences among individuals with and without dementia.

With its large size and organic silhouette, on one side it accommodates access for wheelchair users, and on the other side, games, and textures, tailored for those with dementia, creating a playful environment that encourages social interaction.

At Seniorcare, we are committed to the well-being and safety of the elderly and dependent individuals, as well as the professionals responsible for their daily care.

Design is an integral part of our essence, as evidenced in our latest catalogue by our collaboration with studio Yonoh for the Unna collection.

We are currently developing new care and nursing home furniture pieces, entrusting once again prestigious Spanish designers. This will allow us to merge their creativity and innovation with our extensive experience in this furniture segment.
